MyPrintCenter, 2025
Redesign and rework the printing system at Georgia Tech to reduce the amount of paper waste generated and save everyone money.
key takeaways
overview
class: Design & Community
duration: 3 Weeks
professor: Kimberly Snyder
team: Daniel Lee, Jett Lopez
tools:
At Georgia Tech, there is a culture of printing integrated within each curriculum. For a system that is used daily, there are many pain points that are going unaddressed. These pain points are causing wasted paper, uncertainty, and elevated costs for the users and the university. Our team conducted this case study to eliminate this pain points.
research
What's the problem?
Through surveys and observational research around campus, we learned that students reprinted 3 times on average because of misprints, uncertainty, and/or printer issues. This accounts for a lot of wasted money and paper.
insights
1.
People want assurance before printing their work. From observational studies, we noticed if students are struggling, other students are likely to leave and search for other printers even if the wait isn’t long.
2.
People expect their prints to fail. From our interviews, students emphasized that they take additional steps knowing that it’ll probably take a few tries to get one file printed properly.
3.
Printing at Georgia Tech is a wasteful process. Over three weeks, we observed 38 students printing in the College of Design, with 25% of students needing to reprint. But how much does it cost for the school to cover these failed prints?
prototyping
Once we identified the specific pain points and gathered insights, we began prototyping the workflow. Below you can see the original MyPrintCenter:
The user workflow became essential to understand because we wanted to enforce behavioral techniques and habits into the user's interaction with the new platform.
Once the workflow was finalized, my team and I began working on the wireframes for this platform. We focused on simplicity and ease of use while maintaining Georgia Tech's brand language. Throughout this prototyping process, we were constantly getting user feedback from students that use the current printing system often.
final
After many iterations, we created the revamped MyPrintCenter. We had the opportunity to present this platform to an OIT member at Georgia Tech and move forward with its implementation! View the platform in more detail below:
key takeaways
1. Understanding of existing systems and their pain points.
2. Estimating impacts before and after use of new platform.
3. Blending of simplistic design and behavioral reinforcement for desired results.
